Throughout this past weekend, fans were mesmerized by the golf being played at the U. S. Open in New York.
As the weekend went on, the amazing storylines grew. There was the well-publicized story of Phil Mickelson, who has now been a runner-up five times at the Open, but has yet to win the event.
There was the story of Tiger Woods, who is always the story of every tournament. But, Tiger never really got untracked on the greens and finished the tournament at even par.
There was the remarkable story of David Duval. Once dubbed as one of the next great players in the game, Duval has battled a series of issues in his career. He lost his confidence and lost his status in the game. That is, until this past weekend when he served notice that he might be back! Let’s hope so.
There was the story of unknown Ricky Barnes who was leading the tournament after three rounds.
Then, there was Lucas Glover! Who? Lucas Glover, the unknown player from Greenville, South Carolina, a former All-American at Clemson who is known for being a very well-read southern gentleman. And, I like him because he was a communications studies major in college. There is nothing like rooting for a fellow journalism and communications brother.
No one gave Glover any credit for hanging near the top of the leader board. Most network analysts poked fun at his lack of fame. But on Monday, when the dust settled, Lucas Glover was the U. S. Open champ.
Not many knew his name before the tournament. But everyone knows him now. Would you agree?
